Godyffai | The Divine Chronicles I – Fortissimo Arc
Episode 8 : The Spring Festival
The long winter had ended, and tonight Godyffai’s foremost ceremony, the Spring Festival, was to be held.
The sky had been clear since morning, and the wind was gentle.
The Spring Festival was held at Gadia Palace, a palace built by the eleventh king of Godyffai, King Ryde, and
its splendor was a sight to behold.
From the great hall to the audience chamber, from the salons to the gardens, everything had been designed around the theme of light,
conceived so that the hearts of all people living in the kingdom might always be filled with light.
Anyone could take part in the Spring Festival, so the people rejoiced in this magnificent clear weather, and great crowds gathered, eager to see every corner of the royal palace.
Strangely enough, no matter how many people came, Gadia Palace never once felt crowded.
For this day, the House of Zyee and the House of Silas had made every preparation down to the last detail.
No one knew that the sacred barrier had already been utterly broken by Dovdibelini and Fargot.
The people of Godyffai were a formidable collective of espers, and were experts at reading the air—
but Dovdibelini was a witch who surpassed even that. Over the kingdom’s sacred barrier, Dovdibelini’s own demonic barrier had been laid.
High above Gadia Palace—though it lay within a different dimension no one could ever see—a crossroads had been created right at the center of that unseen space,
and there stood Dovdibelini, clad entirely in black, her face twisted as though she had bitten into something bitter, holding aloft a black umbrella of shadow. Ah, God—not even Reelia had known of it.
Night fell, and just as the stargazers had foretold, a single comet crossed the great sky, and with that signal, the Spring Festival began.
At Gadi, the center of the barrier, King Gianan and Queen Medee could be seen, along with High Priest Zone and Forve.
Around Gadi, holy water rose in three towering, concentric fountains, forming an impenetrable defense.
Two flames, kindled at the First Temple of Gadia Palace, appeared as sacred lights and advanced this way.
At the northeast corner of the barrier stood Kiek, chief attendant of the House of Zyee, and at the southwest corner stood Pashel of the House of Silas;
receiving the two sacred lights, each stepped forward to Shizma Zyee and Al Silas.
Shizma and Al purified the two lights with King Gianan’s golden scepter and silver staff, both engraved with the mark of Deargilg,
then quietly gave the command by telepathy.
At once, without a moment’s delay, the great drums thundered as one.
Next, the two sacred lights were divided among the four torches raised by four priests.
Then those four lights split into eight, and the eight split into sixteen.
The sixteen divided into four companies, and by teleportation scattered to the east, west, south, and north.
At the place each of the four sacred-fire companies reached stood a white birch tree, each one firmly protected by the psy of the royal family. They kindled the firewood arranged around each tree, purifying the evil of the four directions.
Between the sacred lights stood many great water jars carved of gemstone, and the flames reflected upon their surfaces again and again, layer upon layer—
and one could well understand why the Spring Festival was also called the Festival of the Great Flame.
All the people recited the scriptures of Aldinapha, handed down since ancient times.
The raised scripture books shone with the characters of Aldinapha gleaming gold—an unimaginably beautiful sight.
Anyone who had experienced this festival even once could surely understand
how, every year, once the Spring Festival ended, Godyffai’s sacred barrier grew stronger, and the souls of the people were refined all the more.
But this time, something was different. Dovdibelini, lurking above Gadia Palace, stirred up the wind with her umbrella.
The gentle wind turned into a whirlwind, felling the white birches one after another.
No one had ever imagined that the royal family’s psychokinetic defenses could be breached. Everyone doubted their own eyes.
But it was no nightmare.
The fire showed no mercy, swallowing everything around it in an instant, flame wrapping flame, swelling in the blink of an eye into a great blaze.
People fled in panic. Screams echoed one upon another.
And then the fire, as though driven by some fierce and terrible malice, surged straight toward the king and queen at Gadi.
And somehow—unbelievably—the fire rose beyond even the towering holy water!!
“Your Majesty, please flee!! It is dangerous here!! Quickly!! Mother, you too!!”
Forve strained with all his strength to lead the king and queen to safety beyond the barrier.
But sand whipped up by the whirlwind had struck their eyes, and neither the king nor the queen could move.
“Lord Forve!! I will hold back the fire with my psy!! Please, take the two of them and flee at once!!”
High Priest Zone’s voice echoed.
“Understood. I will protect the king and queen without fail!! Take care!!”
Those words were the last he ever exchanged with High Priest Zone.
The instant Forve had led the king and queen clear of the great blaze, Gadi was swallowed by the devil’s fire and collapsed,
and High Priest Zone did not return.
Overwhelmed, no one could find words; there was only weeping, endless and broken.
Shizma, Al, Pashel—every priest wept torrents of tears. Even King Gianan…
Not even the queen had ever seen the king weep, yet now he wept without shame before all.
“O Zone, you always lit the ground before my feet with your light.
And yet, so suddenly, you have journeyed on to God’s side…
Ah, God—I beg You, keep Zone in Your eternal love.”
“Lord Zone, this life you gave me, I shall never let go to waste.
Watch over us always.”
So the queen spoke, and collapsed where she stood.
Everyone’s faces and hands were black with soot. Their clothes were caked in mud. Some among them were even bleeding.
Forve, choking on his own sobs, thought of Dovdibelini and Fargot.
It was those two—there was no doubt. I cannot forgive them! I cannot forgive them! I will not forgive them!!
When the deeply mournful funeral of High Priest Zone had ended, the whole kingdom entered a year of mourning.
For Pashel’s sake, Forve told him everything about Fargot,
but Pashel only stood in stunned silence, murmuring that it could not be true.
She was a woman he had loved so deeply—there was no way he could accept it at once.
“…Are you saying all of it—all of it was Fargot’s scheme?”
“I very nearly had my own soul stolen away.”
“…I don’t—I don’t believe it. A woman so beautiful… there’s no way she would do such a thing.”
“She is the reincarnation of Queen Fargot Godyffai. She was born carrying resentment within her very soul.”
“…I… I will trust her conscience. …My love for her… will not change.”
Pashel’s face turned deathly pale, and trembling, he walked out.
Hah…… Forve let out an unwitting breath, and thought of Pashel’s feelings.
Pashel was struggling now, sinking in that deep, dark mire.
And it was not Pashel alone. Every last person of Godyffai stood now in the midst of the calamity wrought by Dovdibelini and Fargot. I must take a firmer stand……
And yet it was known to all that psychic power could not overcome magic.
The following year, when High Priest Zone’s mourning period ended and the new High Priest was announced, the talk of the town was all of a rising star named Imani Ordin.
Imani Ordin, who succeeded High Priest Zone, was a person of great sincerity, gentle and humble in nature.
Yet his ability was extraordinary as well, and it was said that with his remarkable gift for leadership, any plan he set his heart upon would surely be realized.
“Your Majesty, I, Imani Ordin, shall protect Godyffai even at the cost of my life.”
“Imani Ordin, I entrust it to you. Everyone has great hopes for you. Do your utmost.”
“I am deeply honored. I shall devote my very life to it.”
And so the first thing High Priest Ordin undertook was a reassignment of the priesthood—
to rebuild a priestly world still bound by old customs.
“Do your best under the new organization.”
The First Priest gazed at the new organizational chart handed to him and drew a small, sharp breath.
“This is… quite a bold reform. You’ve been remarkably decisive.
But… is the House of Nigerl alone left unchanged?”
“That house’s elder is troublesome. I’ll consider it further in time.”
“The House of Nigerl is one of the priesthood’s most eminent old houses. It won’t be easy.”
“When that elder starts putting in his word, nothing moves forward. It gives me a headache.”
It was Wolf Nigerl, elder of the House of Nigerl, who had been listening to this conversation from outside the door.
Hmph, what does that young upstart think he’s saying. As if I’d let some Ordin change the traditions of my House of Nigerl.
The House of Nigerl has held the position of chief scribe for generations. Whatever happens, I won’t let him interfere.
But perhaps I ought to strike first, before he strikes at me……
Wolf’s face twisted as though he had bitten into something bitter, and he seemed to be turning something over in his mind.
It gave off a damp, oppressive air, as if a black dove had settled upon him.
The death of High Priest Zone had been a loss beyond measure—as if, one might say, the kingdom had lost its North Star.
The priests followed High Priest Ordin’s instructions, yet behind his back, the slander and gossip never ceased.
Such a thing would never have happened in High Priest Zone’s day.
There was one who watched this with quiet satisfaction: Wolf Nigerl.
Whenever he found someone voicing discontent, he would say this:
“High Priest Ordin is still young. We must be the ones to guide him.”
“Guide him, you say—but he’s the high priest. What could we possibly do?”
“Well, that’s just it. Even a high priest holds his place only by everyone’s vote. One never knows.”
With those words, Wolf let out an unsettling, knowing chuckle, and muttering something under his breath, shut himself away in the scribes’ chamber.
Elsewhere, at Vib Cottage in the Forest of Vurno, joyful news had reached Reelia from the House of Zyee.
Fara had been granted King Gianan’s permission and would be returning to the House of Zyee.
“Fara, congratulations. You’ve cleared one great hurdle. From tomorrow, a new world awaits you. Do your best.”
Reelia spoke, her gentle eyes shining.
“Fara, I’m so glad for you.”
Lindsy was desperately holding back her tears.
“Thank you so much, Lady Reelia, Lindsy. I will never forget this kindness as long as I live.”
As Fara promised the two of them she would see them again and said her farewells, the Forest of Vurno gently swayed its trees,
as though celebrating Fara’s departure.
Reuniting with her family breathed warmth into Fara’s heart.
But waiting for her at the same time was news of High Priest Zone’s death.
Fara was left speechless, unable to hold back her tears.
And what struck Fara with even greater shock, crushing her heart, was the further decree from King Gianan that followed:
“Fara Zyee shall henceforth walk the path of the priesthood.”
Fara read the document over and over, and for a moment her mind reeled; for a time she remained in a daze.
For priests were not permitted to marry.
Word of Fara’s return and the king’s decree reached Forve almost at once, and there was no telling how deeply it crushed him too.
And yet the bond between the royal family and the priesthood ran very deep. It did not mean they could never meet.
If anything, it would be far easier to meet this way than as an engaged couple whose marriage remained postponed indefinitely.
Surely this was the king’s own consideration for them, the two of them thought, and gave thanks to His Majesty.
The examination Fara took for the priesthood school was no easy one, but with the knowledge and power she had gained at Vib Cottage,
and with a letter of recommendation from Reelia, Fara earned her certification of graduation in no time and began her path as a fledgling priest.
Even so, everyone began as an assistant priest at first.
Assistant priests were required to live in strictly disciplined dormitories, and Fara came to live in a dormitory called Aersbul.
Aersbul was a truly beautiful dormitory, but what pleased Fara even more was that her roommate, a woman named Hana, had such a good nature—cheerful and full of curiosity.
The two of them grew close in no time and became the best of friends.
One day, while Fara was in a meeting with a senior priest, a loud voice came from the next room.
“High Priest Ordin, isn’t that going too far!!”
“But the record of the oracle doesn’t match.”
“I don’t know anything about it.”
“Yesterday’s scribe was you.”
“I said I don’t know anything about it!!”
“Even just recently, this makes the third time.”
“……”
“Scribe Nigerl, I must ask you to refrain from scribal duties for a time.”
“……”
“This matter must also be reported to His Majesty.”
“……What?”
“I had held off on the reassignment for the House of Nigerl alone, but I think I’ll have to reconsider that now.”
The moment High Priest Ordin’s words rang out cold, Wolf Nigerl slammed the door shut with a great noise and strode swiftly away.
Fara and Priest Ninu had been listening in wide-eyed surprise, but what surprised them even more were High Priest Ordin’s next words.
“I would like your help with the reform of the priesthood. Would you be willing, Lord Eldis?”
When Fara told Hana about this, Hana said in astonishment,
“Lord Eldis—you mean *that* Lord Eldis?”
“Yes, that one.”
“Priest Lavi once told me that Scribe Nigerl is stubborn, but never does anything truly wrong.”
“I’m not doubting him either. But still—it’s Lord Eldis.”
“……That’s true, isn’t it.”
“Somehow I have an ominous feeling about this. I hope nothing happens.”
Uneasy, Fara and Hana slipped beneath their warm blankets and soon fell into a deep sleep.
To be continued…
